Gas Boiler Selection
This page outlines the issues of selecting a new boiler
Do I need a new boiler?
- New boilers are more efficient
TRUE - typically they are 10-20% more efficient, but not everyone seems
to claim big savings. Maybe they jst like a warmer house.
- Combi boilers don't last as long as standard boilers.
Combi boilers include pump and valve, rather than having them externally. Overall
there probably isn't much in it compared to a new standard boiler.
- Old boilers are easier to fix and go wrong less often
TRUE - as long as you can still get parts. On older boilers the parts were common
across different boilers so often they are still available (despite the fear cast by certain
large companies in the maintenance sector who would like you to fit a new boiler)
- Do the savings justify a new boiler
Probably not. A new boiler (fitted) will cost around £2000, which maybe breaks
even over the life of the boiler.
- What about all the other bits in the system?
- Radiators: If installed since c.1980 they are probably fine. A "powerflush" is
always worthwile (unless you have a 'primatic' tank), followed by treating with rust inhibitor.
- Thermostatic Radiator Valves - always worth fitting to both old and new systems, but don't buy the cheapest as they don't last.
- Hot water tank - If its a 'primatic' tank it will have to go. New tanks are much better insulated, but have to be pumped, rather than gravity heated.
- Room thermostat - new ones operate to a tighter range leading to greater comfort
- Programmer - you could combine this with the room thermostat and get a
Programmable Room Stat for the ultimate in comfort. Recommended for
older people as they maintain a minimum temperature
- Any other advantages of a new boiler?
